The Bias of Old NFL

With the NFL going through its 100th season it was obvious of them to make a bunch of top 100 list. Players, Characters, Teams, Plays, Etc. I being the NFL fan that I am I watched many of these videos and was disgusted by some of these choices the NFL made specifically when it came to the top plays of all time. Now you can call it recency bias or say I have no respect for the game of old but the number 8 and number 2 plays of all time do not even belong in the top 100. Number 2 is just an absurdly overated play that I loose my mind every time I see it and they sing its praise. Here are the videos of the top 10, Number 8 starts at 7:19 in the first video and number two is at 12:24 in the second video.

Let’s start with Number 8 “The Ice Bowl” Bart Star leads the packers down the field in the frozen conditions to win the game with a QB Sneak. I’ll start by giving props for the ability to lead a team down a frozen field after being flat the entire second half but this is the top 100 plays OF ALL TIME! Tom Brady does things like this is his sleep just watch

And those are just the post season. A simple QB sneak to win the game does not deserve to be number 8 all time regardless of field conditions. Now onto number two, the play that just makes me so furious with its spot on this list and how often it comes up as one of these top plays that has ever happened in the NFL. “The Catch” what a name for such a simple catch. Joe Montana to Dwight Clark to win the Super Bowl and kick off a dynasty. I SEE THIS PLAY ALMOST EVERY NFL SUNDAY! The fact this play is at number 2 and you have the Big Ben to Santonio Holmes at number 6!? It’s almost the exact same sequence but with a throw and a catch that are miles beyond what Montana and Clark did in regards to how amazing of a catch and throw it was, I mean come on its a masterpiece in motion!

These are not the only instances where I am just dumbfounded by how overrated the NFL of old is but two shining examples of how biased it is towards it sometimes. I respect where the game started and its history but when we have Patrick Mahomes out here slinging the ball downfield without looking, Lamar Jackson putting defends on skates weekly, and guys like DeAndre Hopkins that make some of the most stunning catches look easy they put these old highlights and players to SHAME! Also put Drew Brees on the NFL 100 team.
