Growing up we took many different road trips going many different places and after awhile playing Pokemon or Megaman Battle Network 4 on my Gameboy would get a little boring or frustrating and there needed to be other ways to pass the time. There were always certain things we would do to pass the time growing up and as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned a couple more that will help pass the time. I know a lot of these may be unique to myself so ill give a bit of an explaination.
#1: Categories- Growing up this was probably the game we played the most in the car on road trips and at the same time the most simple. Basically someone says to everyone to name either 3 or 5 things of a certain category like 3 vacations, 5 animals, 3 places you want to go in your life. Probably the most simple game you could think of and we played it constantly. Big props go out to my mom and dad for actually playing this over and over again because I know for a fact we picked a lot of the same categories over and over again and it must have been so awful but they sure always made it so much fun to be my #1 favorite road trip game.
#2 ABC Game: This game has made some really great memories as well, one specifically was while driving in the van in Florida for training trip my senior year when it took us almost the whole 2 hour drive to finally find a word that started with Z and all of us were so excited jumping around in the car. This one has some more rules but it really makes you keep an eye out while driving. You have to find world that begin with each letter of the alphabet and license plates cannot be used it has to be real words or names of places.
#3 20 Questions: I’m sure everyone has played this game before its a classic but we would break it down even further and get more specific which was a lot of fun
#4 If I won the lottery: This wasn’t so much a game as it was a discussion but the ideas we would all come up with were ever changing and always eccentric. From building our own hockey rink to getting new cars and a pool. No matter what though anytime it came up my dad would always start with “well first of all I would put away half just for the taxes” it would always make me laugh as this was all just a hypothetical and discussing what we would want to buy with the money
#5 Marco Polo: “This dumbass has no idea what Marco Polo is” hear me out. Marco Polo, historical explorer and classic game to play in the pool but surely not a game to play in the car right? Wrong. This one isn’t made for the highways but more for small towns you may be driving through or local back roads. We discovered this one when we were younger driving around a beach town by my aunts house. It’s started as honking and waving to see who waved back and then some how we just started shouting Marco our the window to see who would respond with Polo. We spent a good portion of that night just driving around having a blast yelling out the window. Best one we ever got was large group of people at an ice cream shop all responded at once and we couldn’t have been more excited.
